Planning your wedding comes with plenty of decisions, but choosing your wedding cake should be one of the sweetest parts of the process. A wedding cake tasting is where you try flavors, see design ideas, and start creating a cake that feels like yours.
At Sweet-Treats Bakery, that cake is more than dessert. It’s a centerpiece that reflects your style, and Mary is the one baker who bakes it, tastes it with you, and delivers it.
Maybe you’re planning an elegant wedding in Roanoke, Virginia. Maybe it’s a celebration at Smith Mountain Lake, or somewhere else in the surrounding area. Here’s what to expect when it’s time for your tasting.
What Is a Wedding Cake Tasting?
A tasting is your chance to try flavors, fillings, and frostings before you decide. But it’s also how Mary learns about your wedding: your style, your guest count, your venue, and the feeling you want the day to have.
Sweet-Treats keeps more than 30 cake and filling combinations, from traditional wedding favorites to specialty flavors, so there’s a real conversation to have at the tasting instead of a pick from three options.

Come Prepared With Your Wedding Details
Knowing your wedding date, venue, guest count, colors, and any cake inspiration helps Mary make recommendations that fit your day.
If you’ve been saving photographs, Pinterest boards, florals, invitations, or a dress you love, bring them. You don’t have to know exactly what you want. An inspiration photo is a starting point, and the pieces you love get built into a cake made for your wedding.
You’ll Get to Explore Cake Flavors
Your cake doesn’t have to be one flavor. Depending on the design, different tiers can carry different flavors and fillings, and pairing them is worked out at the tasting itself.
A light, fruity cake suits a summer wedding at Smith Mountain Lake. Richer caramel, chocolate, spice, or seasonal flavors work better for fall and winter.
We’ll Talk About Your Wedding Cake Design
Once the flavor conversation is settled, Mary talks through what the cake will look like: buttercream textures, delicate florals, Lambeth piping, vintage designs, gold accents, sugar flowers, or a modern statement cake. Colors can come from your flowers, your invitation, or your dress.
Your inspiration cake doesn’t have to be copied exactly. Mary takes the elements you love and builds something for your celebration, not a reproduction.

Cakes are quoted by tier count, design, and guest number. Nobody can price a custom cake off a page, including this one. Call with your date, venue, and guest count for a real quote.
Book 8 to 12 months ahead. Sweet-Treats is one baker, not a production kitchen, so Saturdays in May and October go first.
The largest event served so far was 160 guests, a corporate catering event at Hotel Roanoke. A working ceiling, not a theoretical one.
We’ll Determine How Much Cake You Actually Need
You don’t need a traditional slice for every guest. If you’re also serving cupcakes, mini desserts, or cookies, Mary can size the cake around the rest of your dessert table instead of guessing from headcount alone.
Don’t Forget About the Dessert Table
Your cake can be the centerpiece without being the only dessert. A styled table with cupcakes, cake pops, cakesicles, cookies, and cheesecakes gives guests more to choose from and adds a second focal point at the reception. It’s all built in the same kitchen as your cake, on the same delivery.
Consider Charcuterie for Cocktail Hour
Dessert isn’t the only gap Sweet-Treats fills. A charcuterie spread covers the hour between your ceremony and reception, while the wedding party is off taking photographs and guests are waiting. See the full guide to wedding charcuterie and grazing tables in Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake for what goes on a spread, what it costs, and when to book one.
If You’re Planning an Outdoor Wedding
Say so at the tasting. Buttercream softens above the mid seventies, so a July reception and an October one are genuinely different jobs, and tiered cakes are built cold and assembled on site rather than driven fully finished. For a lake wedding especially, the one thing worth arranging ahead of the day is shade for the cake table and a level surface underneath it. An uneven deck under a tiered cake is the one avoidable disaster.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
Earlier rather than later, especially for spring, summer, or fall. Once your date and venue are set, that’s the time to call, even before the cake design is finalized.
Your Wedding Cake Should Feel Like You
There isn’t one right wedding cake. The right one is the one that fits your celebration and makes you smile when you see it, whether that’s timeless white buttercream, romantic vintage piping, a dramatic statement cake, or a small cutting cake next to a full dessert table.
